Raiņa Cemetery – originally known as the New Riga Cemetery.
The Raiņa Cemetery was officially opened in 1929 when it received its name, as Rainis was buried there. In 1925, burials began for individuals who did not belong to any religious congregation, which led to the colloquial names "Cemetery of the Godless" and "Pagan Cemetery."
In 1935, a monument was placed on Rainis' grave. Next to his grave, in 1943, his wife Aspazija was also buried.
After World War II, the cemetery mainly became the final resting place for cultural and scientific figures, military personnel, members of the Communist Party, and Soviet officials.
