The poet A. Pumpurs (1841-1902) created epos “Lacplesis” (1888) about the legendary national hero Lacplesis (13th century), the fighter against foreign conquerors that is based on folk tales.
In 1896, A. Pumpurs settled in Daugavpils. He served as an army quartermaster. A. Pumpurs was included in the circles of the local Latvian intelligentsia. Unfortunately, his staying in Daugavpils was fatal for him: his daughter and son died here, the poet himself fell ill with an incurable disease. The street and the square in the center of Daugavpils, where the bust of the poet (sculptor I.Krumina) is located, have the name of the poet.
