How to Choose Flowers for a Final Farewell?

Flowers are an essential part of both wonderful and sad moments of life. Not without a reason, because through flowers we speak from heart to heart...

With flowers, we greet our loved ones, and we also say our final goodbye to them forever.

What are the main types of funeral flowers, and how to choose the right ones?

Funeral Wreaths

This is the most traditional and commonly used type of funeral flowers brought to funerals. Usually, the wreath has a round shape and is made on a sturdy spruce base in the classic version. There are also designer wreaths, created by florists on oasis bases, but these wreaths are sensitive to movement and harder to hold during the farewell ceremony. Typically, a mourning ribbon with final farewell words is attached to the wreath. In Latvia, it is customary to use national linen ribbons, as well as silk and satin ribbons in white, black, or burgundy colors.

Carrying a wreath at a funeral is usually reserved for the closest family members or work colleagues.

Sometimes, very large, two-meter oval wreaths on stands are used at funerals, which look very grand and special. However, it should be noted that such a wreath is very heavy and difficult to hold or transport to the ceremony.

An especially touching type of wreath is the heart-shaped funeral wreath. Ordering such a wreath requires more time than a traditional funeral wreath.
For military and state officials, as well as sometimes for memorial ceremonies, it is customary to choose a boat-shaped wreath with special handles carried by two people.

Funeral Sprays

Funeral sprays are the second most popular type of funeral flower arrangement, made on a flat base, mostly of spruce branches. The spray has an elongated shape, making it easy to hold during the farewell ceremony, and after the burial, it can easily be placed on the grave.

Funeral sprays also feature mourning ribbons with inscriptions, or simpler plastic mourning ribbons in black, white, gold, or other colors.

Funeral Bouquets

Traditionally, white flowers are brought to funerals, and close ones often choose red flowers to express their love. However, color symbolism is relative, as flowers of any color can be beautiful. There is a tradition of bringing an even number of flowers to funerals or cemeteries. However, if the bouquet consists of many small flowers that merge into one composition, the number doesn't matter.

Funeral bouquets are also made in a flat form, but unlike funeral sprays, they are not made on a spruce base. Flowers and lighter greenery are arranged gradually so that the bouquet can be laid flat, with the flowers visible. This makes it easy to place the bouquet on the grave during the ceremony.

Flowers for Cremation

When saying goodbye to the deceased in a crematorium hall, people sometimes think that a funeral wreath or spray might not be suitable for the occasion. However, both wreaths and sprays, as well as floral arrangements, can be used at such funerals to make the final farewell beautiful and truly solemn. We have communicated with crematoria multiple times and can confidently say that there are no restrictions on the number of flowers, although many people believe otherwise.

Of course, a simpler, smaller bouquet or cut flowers can also be used. It has been observed that for cremation ceremonies, people often choose fewer flowers, sometimes limiting themselves to two to four flowers or simpler bouquets without the heavy spruce bases.

Sympathy Flowers

Flowers are the best way to express sympathy to the loved ones of the deceased. Funeral bouquets or baskets are often ordered to express condolences to grieving relatives from distant family members or friends who cannot be present during such a sad time.
