Description

On June 26, 1941, Daugavpils was captured by the Nazi army. The persecution of Jews began several days later. The first significant place of extermination was the so-called railway garden behind the city jail.

On July 15, 1941, there followed an order that the entire Jewish population must relocate to the fortification by the bridge, where the ghetto was established in the Griva neighborhood. According to several accounts, approximately 14000 people were rounded up in the ghetto. These were residents of Daugavpils, refugees from Lithuania, Jews from Kraslava, Griva, Indra, Dagda, Ilukste county, and other surrounding towns and villages. On December 5, 1941, there were 962 Jews left in the ghetto, but half a year later, on May 1, 1942, auxiliary police and Viktors Arajs’ commando killed nearly 500 Jews. 487 people remained alive. They were transferred to the fortress, where they labored in workshops.

On October 28, 1943, the remaining prisoners were sent to Riga, to the Kaiserwald district. In the fall, the last prisoners of the Daugavpils ghetto were shipped by boat to Danzig (Poland), and were then dispersed to various labor camps: Bergen – Belsen, Shtuttgof. Less than one hundred peolpe survived, some of them returned to Daugavpils.
