Description

The monument dedicated to the warriors killed in World War I and in the Latvian liberty fights was unveiled on 3rd September 1939. The inscription on the monument reads as follows: "To the memory of the unknown warriors fallen in action 1914 - 1920".

In the centre of the monument, there was a copper relief, in which a maiden with a water bowl was depicted. This memorial mark was made by the metal artist Alfons Vīksna (1906 - 1984) as his diploma work, which won a gold medal at an arts and crafts exhibition in Berlin. Chiselling of the granite rock was done by Eduards Kuraua's company, which was established in 1911, and was one of the largest rock processing and manufacturing companies in Latvia. The company participated in the construction of the Brethren Cemetery, the Liberty Monument and many other monuments and memorials in Latvia.

Unfortunately, the relief made by A.Vīksna was lost in the 50s of the 20th century. Upon initiative by the Dobele Town Council this component of the monument was restored and unveiled on 11th November 2002, on Lāčplēša Day. The restored stone relief was made by sculptoress Inta Berga.
