Description

The monument “United for Latvia” (often called as “Latgale’s Māra”) is the most recognizable symbol of Rezekne. The monument has his difficult and tragic destiny, which is similar to the destiny of Latgale…

The bronze composition of the monument reveals the idea of the freedom fights against the outside reign, nation’s efforts to create and to defend its state – Latvia. The central woman’s statue with the cross in the lifted hand and the inscription on the pedestal “United for Latvia” symbolizes Latgale, liberated from the reign of the Bolsheviks in January 1920.

The idea to put the monument in the very heart of the city arose in 30s of 20th century and it was voiced by the Minister of Welfare Vladislavs Rubulis. To his mind the monument should have become the implementation of the idea about united Latgale and Latvia.

On 13th, 1934 the project competition was finished. The first place was given to the work of the student of Art Academy Leons Tomašickis “The land of Māra”. After a year the monument up-building commission signed the contract with the famous sculptor Kārlis Jansons who embodied the idea of L.Tomašickis.

The foundation of the monument is 3,5 metres deep, the length of the pedestal is 5,8 metres. For the construction of the foundation 400 sacks of cement were used. The total height of the monument is 11 metres. The height of the sculptural group is 5 metres, weight – 3 tons. The monument was moulded in bronze in Finland. There also was found the pink granite for the pedestal. The monument was unveiled for the 1st time on 7th September, 1939.

Unfortunately, already at night from November 5th to 6th, 1940 the Soviet authorities took off the monument from the pedestal. But the dethroned monument was renewed and unveiled again on 22nd August, 1943. Now the monument stood untouched for seven years, but in June 1950 it was dethroned again.

For some tens of the years the monument of Lenin was on the pedestal (author O.Kalējs). In the beginning of 90s the Lenin monument was dethroned and on 12th August, 1992 the monument “United for Latvia” took its place again.

The renewal of Latgale’s Māra was done by the son of Kārlis Jansons – Andrejs Jansons with the help of sculptor from Daugavpils Indulis Folkmans.
