Day of Remembrance – a heartfelt Latvian tradition

Day of Remembrance, also known as Days of the Deceased or Memorial Days, are a special time when families gather at cemeteries to remember and honor their loved ones.
It is one of Latvia’s most heartfelt and deep-rooted traditions, bringing generations together and strengthening the connection with one’s homeland.

When and where do these days take place?

These remembrance events are held in Latvia from late June to early September, mostly on weekends, and each cemetery has its own date.
Lutheran and Catholic congregations often hold separate services, and in many places a secular remembrance ceremony is also held so everyone can take part.

Day of Remembrance are more than a religious occasion – they are a chance to be with family, reunite with relatives, and take a quiet moment to remember those no longer with us.
People travel from across Latvia and even abroad to visit their family graves – it is a meaningful and emotional day for many.

Before these special days, cemeteries are carefully prepared – fresh flowers and candles are placed, plants trimmed, flowers replanted, and fresh gravel spread.
This preparation is a symbolic act of respect and care for the memory of loved ones.
