On September 1, 2025, the world said farewell to Graham Greene, a remarkable Canadian First Nations actor whose presence on screen and stage carried both strength and gentleness. He was 73.
Born on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, Greene rose to international recognition with his unforgettable portrayal of Kicking Bird in Dances With Wolves (1990), a role that earned him an Academy Award nomination and opened the doors for greater Indigenous representation in Hollywood.
Over the years, his career flourished with roles in The Green Mile, Maverick, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Wind River, Reservation Dogs, The Last of Us, Tulsa King, and many more. Each performance bore his unique ability to bring dignity, humor, and humanity to every character.
Greene’s achievements were widely recognized: a Grammy Award, a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame, Canadian Screen Awards, and, most recently, the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for lifetime achievement. Yet beyond the accolades, he will be remembered most for his humility, kindness, and commitment to portraying his heritage with respect.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Hilary Blackmore, their daughter Lilly, and grandson Talo, who carry forward his light and legacy.
